The Garden Club of Long Beach Island was
established in 1958 to promote an interest in gardening, encourage
planting, landscaping and conservation for the beautification and
protection of our environment.
The present day club is involved in many civic programs. The landscaping and maintenance of the Edith Duff Gwinn Gardens in Barnegat Light is an on-going project. This award winning garden is planted and maintained from spring to fall by members of the Garden Club. The garden is located around the Barnegat Light Museum at 5th andCentral in Barnegat Light NJ. Visitors are welcome.
The club orders and sells to the public, at a nominal cost, trees, shrubs and plants, that are suitable for a sea shore environment.
An active committee works with the preservation of birds and wildlife. They distribute bluebird nesting boxes along with other types of birdhouses and monitor the use of osprey platforms and nesting of piping plovers on the beaches.
Eight times a year the club presents a program for the benefit of senior citizens who meet at the St. Francis Community Center for lunch. Plants, flowers and video tapes are delivered to the Manahawkin Convalescent Center on selected holidays.
Fresh Flower arrangements are placed in the Long Beach Island Historical Museum each week, June through September. Seasonal arrangements are placed in the Surf City and Beach Haven libraries the first week of each month. Scholarships, donations and grants are awarded annually.
The Annual Holiday Tour of Homes has become a highlight of the Island winter season with 600 people attending the tour. The homes are festively decorated celebrating Hanukkah and Christmas.
The Club meets the second Thursday of each month except July and August.
